0 Arabica coffee plants developed in 11 ‘subak’

Bali Plantation Agency will develop Arabica coffee plantations in 11 subak (traditional Balinese farming organization) in Buleleng, Tabanan and Karangasem regencies to meet the increasing demand for the commodity on the world market. Dewa Made Buana Duwuran, head of the agency, told journalists in Denpasar on Monday that the first plantation development project would target these 11 subak areas.

“In the following stages, the project will target 64 subak all over the island,” Duwuran said. Bali has several coffee production centers, including Kintamani in Bangli, Petang in Badung, Sawan, Sukasada and Kubutambahan in Buleleng regency. “Most of the coffee plantations are being managed on a small scale and are unable to meet the annual export demand for 2,000 kilograms of coffee,” he said. Bali has 10,491 hectares of Arabica coffee plantations producing 3,500 tons of coffee every year for both domestic and international consumption.
