A thirteen-month-old boy who fell into a coma after doctors removed a bullet from his brain died in Makassar on Friday. Fathir Muhammad suffered a mysterious gunshot wound to the head in early February. The boy’s parents took him to Hajj Hospital in Makassar, but doctors were unable to remove the bullet. Seventeen days later, the child underwent surgery at Makassar’s Wahidin Sudirihusodo Hospital.
Surgeons removed the bullet, but failed to prevent young Fathir from falling into a coma. The child died early Friday morning. His mother has urged the police to continue their investigation into the shooting. “I beg sir, please don’t stop the investigation in this case,” Hikmah told Kompas.com. “Reveal the perpetrator.”
Mamajang Police have interviewed several witnesses in the case, but have been unable to explain how the child was shot, deputy police chief Yupensius said. No firearms were found at the scene of the shooting and no one reported hearing the sound of a gunshot. Forensics experts have measured the distance between a hole in the roof the home and the child’s location. They have also run a ballistics test on the bullet extracted from Fathir’s brain.
