0 Makassar Man Arrested for Alleged Murder of Aunt Over Spurned Loan

Police in Makassar have arrested a 29-year-old man for the brutal murder of his aunt, apparently committed because the victim refused to lend him money. Comr. Agung Kanigoro, the Panakkukang subprecinct police chief, said the incident occurred at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The suspect, Adi Nugroho, arrived at the home of his aunt, Vonny, 42, and shortly after talking with her he began stabbing her with a knife, according to a statement from the victim’s maid, Arni.

“It all happened so fast,” Arni told reporters at the police station. “He just went into the house, he killed her and then he ran out.” Vonny died from a slit throat and multiple stab wounds to the torso, police said. Arni said that when she saw the attack, she immediately began screaming. Neighbors rushed to the house, but by then Adi had fled to the roof. Officers managed to arrest Adi about 30 minutes after the incident and quickly placed him in custody to prevent a mob that had formed from attacking him.

Agung said that the suspect had confessed to killing his aunt because she would not give him money that he asked for. “He said he was disappointed that she refused to give him a loan,” he said. “He said that what really riled him was the fact that she apparently used coarse language.” Police are set to charge Adi with two counts of murder, which carry a maximum sentence of death. The victim was described as a prominent local entrepreneur who ran a business selling automobile spare parts.
