Former Simalungun regent T. Zulkarnaen Damanik has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for his embezzlement of 2006 regency budget funds worth Rp 529 million (US$54,818). Damanik was also fined Rp 50 million. The sentence was lighter than the prosecutors’ demand of six years’ imprisonment.
The defendant was found guilty of misappropriating the funds together with regency treasurer Sugiarti, presiding judge Jonner Manik said. They committed the offense between December 2005 and February 2006, when Zulkarnaen had just been appointed as regent for the 2005-2010 period. Zulkarnaen also signed two official invoices worth Rp 300 million and two checks worth more than Rp 200 million. Prosecutor Armadi P. Barus said that he would appeal the sentence, while Zulkarnaen Damanik, through his lawyer Junimart Girsang said that his client would consider the verdict.
