The Bali provincial administration is considering reducing or stopping transporting its cows to other islands, from 2013. Bali has a cattle population of only 623,000 head, according to the Bali Husbandry and Animal Health Agency.
Putu Sumantra, head of the office, said that in 2013 Bali would only ship 60,000 head of cattle, while in 2012, around 75,000 cattle had been sent to various islands. Balinese cattle is famous for its high quality meat. However, the animal population has been decreasing over the last few years. In 2011, Bali had only 250,000 female cows. In 2012, this had reduced to 116,000. The decreasing number of female cows threatens the existence of future cattle generations.
