Democratic Party politician Marzuki Alie said Friday he was convinced the party's chief patron, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, will not nominate a member of his family as the party's new chief. "Yudhoyono has said that the new chief will not be from his family, neither Ibas nor Ibu Ani," he said, referring to Yudhoyono's son and the party's secretary general, Edhie Baskoro and First Lady Ani Yudhoyono.
Marzuki has been seen a frontrunner in the race for the party's top job following the resignation of Anas Urbaningrum last month. He is considered as a neutral figure in the party that is now divided between those who remain loyal to Anas and those who support Yudhoyono. Yudhoyono's supporters have voiced their support for Ani and her brother, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Pramono Edhie Wibowo. While Marzuki and Anas' supporters call for the new chief to be elected through a vote in the upcoming national congress, other top party officials said the new chief would be appointed by Yudhoyono.
