Presently some of our state-owned companies (BUMN) are not paying annual taxes as expected. In fact some of them have declared losses, which is shameless. Not a single BUMN should record a loss. Yet many are not even embarrassed to declare not reaping a profit. The president directors of the BUMN do not necessarily feel the losses are theirs, making them “easy going” in managing their firms.
In the meantime, the state is expecting income from the taxes paid by these BUMN. The news that State-Owned Enterprises Minister Dahlan Iskan fired the president of PT Sang Hyang Seri and two of his subordinates after the three were named suspects in a graft case; (The Jakarta Post, Feb. 13: “Dahlan sacks CEO of agriculture company”) offers stark evidence that the firm was not a reliable taxpayer and source of income for the state.
This is shameful. Former state-owned enterprises minister Laksamana Sukardi once said that the BUMN be sold to private investors who would pay their taxes to the government to better the popular welfare. It’s an idea that deserves consideration. In the meantime, will the government make it easier for the public to apply for business licenses? This is just one way to produce taxpayers; which would inadvertently provide people with livelihoods.
