0 Your letters: The death of a premature baby

The media in Jakarta said that parents who sought medical treatment for their sick baby were refused by eight hospitals. Our sincerest condolences go to the parents of the premature baby that passed away. It is so sad that this should happen in Jakarta. I call on Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to issue a statement to instruct hospitals in Greater Jakarta to give medical treatment to those who are financially less fortunate and to close down hospitals if they refuse to accept patients.

Jokowi should have funds available to help out if these poor, sick individuals who cannot pay for medical treatment. The government is responsible for its citizens and hospitals in Indonesia are known to charge too much for minor medical treatment. Rich citizens never want to be hospitalized in their own country but go to other places such as Singapore, Bangkok, Manila or Kuala Lumpur for treatment.

The service is better and much cheaper. How can Indonesia ever compete with hospitals abroad if the hospitals here charge gigantic sums for medical treatment? Jokowi should not only have funds available for those less fortunate who are seeking medical treatment but he should also help those who cannot pay for funerals. Former governor Ali Sadikin did the same for his citizens.
