As the heir to Indonesia’s top cosmetic empire, the Martha Tilaar Group, Wulan Tilaar says that doing her job is far from easy. Besides being the group’s vice chairwoman, the third child of Martha and H.A.R. Tilaar is also a director of the Puspita Martha International Beauty School as well as the group’s salon day spa. Taking time from her many duties, Wulan says that some inspirational reading has helped to develop herself and the business.
Kisah Tragis Oei Hui Lan – Putri Orang Terkaya di Indonesia (The Tragic Tale of Oei Hui Lan — Daughter of Indonesia’s Richest Man) by Agnes Davonar
I ended up reading the book because we were doing research in relation to the 2013 color edition of the Sari Ayu brand, which is called “Sentrajava”. The colors are actually inspired by Central Java’s north coastal area, so we took a historical trip to Semarang, before reaching Lasem for color inspiration. Regarding the trip, I looked for a suitable book, and I found this Hui Lan book.

Hui Lan was the daughter of the richest man in Southeast Asian, Oei Tiong Ham, a long, long time ago — I forget the era. Tiong Ham was a successful sugar merchant. The book tells of Hui Lan’s life, how she was a really rich girl, but at the end of the day, such things didn’t buy her happiness. The moral of the story is that people will always be in search of satisfaction, wealth and joy, but if you don’t have love and peace in your heart, you won’t feel true happiness. This is like what Hui Lan experienced. She was really rich, but she failed in her marriage and she was unhappy until the last day of her life.
Law of Resonance by Pierre Franckh
I just started reading this, so I can’t say much. However, from the few pages I’ve read, the book is pretty much similar to The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. The book seems to talk about a force of attraction and a law of reciprocity in life. I believe that if you don’t want people to hurt you, then avoid hurting people in the first place.
Estee: A Success Story by Estee Lauder
Estee Lauder is the grandest cosmetic company in the world. I’ve found similarities between Martha Tilaar and Estee Lauder. I even believe that Martha Tilaar is in some way Indonesia’s own Estee Lauder. I found Estee Lauder an inspirational icon because she started a business from something that had never existed before. Now, Estee Lauder has become a much bigger and better company. It even acquired big brands, such as MAC Cosmetics and Bobbi Brown.

Estee Lauder is in the hands of the family’s third generation now, and I believe that scions of Estee have worked hard in running the family legacy — just like we do in Martha Tilaar. Some may say that it’s fun to be Wulan Tilaar with the company and all, but trust me I also face challenges in running the business. However, I’ve learned a lot from Estee Lauder on how she developed the company and maintained it until third generation. Hopefully, we can follow that path, and even do better here at Martha Tillar.
