0 Focusing on Small Businesses, BTPN Posts 28% Growth in 2012

Bank Tabungan Pensiunan Nasional on Wednesday announced that it had posted a 28 percent growth in credits in 2012 to reach Rp 38.8 trillion ($3.99 billion). The Indonesian lender that focuses on pensioners, known as BTPN, attributed the strong growth to its focus on low-income earners and micro and small businesses. Jerry Ng, BTPN's president director, said in a statement that the bank had been able to reach 1,200,468 customers in 2012, 50 percent more than in the previous year. 

Through the bank’s empowerment program called “ Daya” the bank reached out to the community of retired workers, productive but poor families and that of micro and small businesses. “The Daya program is an inseparable part of our business. Each month, regularly, all our BTPN branches hold empowerment programs for our clients because we believe that the Daya program will help improve the capacity as well as loyalty of our customers and therefore directly impact positively on the sustainability and growth of the businesses of BTPN,” 

Jerry said At the end of  2012, the quality of the bank’s productive assets was well maintained and the net non-performing loan position was at 0.31 percent. The figure was at 0.35 percent in the previous year. The bank’s total assets also grew by 27 percent in 2012 to reach Rp 59.1 trillion. BTPN booked a net profit of Rp 2 trillion in 2012, or 41.4 percent up from the precious year, pushing the earnings per share level by 38 percent, from Rp 247 to Rp 341. 

“Based on a business strategy that combines a business and a social aim while remaining focused on the segment that we have been dealing with, we are optimistic that we can continue to grow with a solid capital adequacy ratio of 21.5 percent as per Dec. 31, 2012,” Jerry said. The bank, which earned an AA-rating from Fitch Ratings, currently services more than 1.8 million customers through its network of 1,800 branches that also operate online.
