House of Representatives Speaker Marzuki Alie said that the Democratic Party would not hesitate to fire any of its lawmakers allegedly involved in the extortion case related to the disaster budget for Cianjur, West Java, if they are found guilty. “If there is indication [that they're involved], according to the integrity pact, we will oust them once proven [to be guilty],” said Marzuki, a senior member of the Democratic Party, on Thursday.
Marzuki said that he had heard rumors about the alleged involvement of two Democratic lawmakers, Supomo and Gondo Radityo Gambiro, in an extortion case over the cost of social aid for the Cianjur Regional Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). The House of Representatives Honorary Council have been investigating the pair ever since Muhammad Sukarya, the former official of the Cianjur BNPB, said that the two lawmakers had asked for Rp 1.5 billion ($154,500) to approve the budget.
Supomo denied that he was involved in the case, claiming that it was one of his staff members, named Haris Hartoyo, who extorted them. He admitted that he had once met Sukarya only to make a suggestion that he should not bribe lawmakers as it was a government program. “Try the right mechanism, I told him,” Supomo said. According to Tempo.co, Sukarya said that he asked for Supomo's help to get a 2012 disaster budget for the Cianjur district approved.
Supomo agreed, but as he was not a member of the related commission, he asked Gondo for help. While the lawmakers allegedly received the money, the budget was not disbursed, which led to Sukaryo reporting the case to the honorary council. Muhammad Prakosa, head of the House Honorary Council, said on Tuesday that he had evidence related to the extortion, as quoted by Tempo.co. Muhammad claims that he has the bank document proving that Rp 1 billion was transferred from Sukarya to Haris.
