Bali has among the lowest number of participants in the national occupational social security program as only 8.3 percent of its workers are recorded with state-owned PT Jamsostek. “Some companies are still reluctant to register their employees in the Jamsostek program, thus, this has resulted in the low number of work insurance participants in Bali,” head of the Denpasar office of PT Jamsostek, Ellias Manuhutu, was quoted as saying by Antara news agency on Saturday.
He regretted that some businesses in Bali still considered social security as merely a burden because they had to spend money on the insurance contributions. “They are not aware that registering employees with Jamsostek is a company’s obligation,” he said. “We aim to have more Jamsostek participants in this region,” he said. For 2013, the company aims at a 500 percent increase in Jamsostek participants in Bali. Meanwhile, nationally it is targeting an increase of 13.7 million participants this year and 37 million by 2017.
