Indonesia’s antigraft body has detained seven Riau legislators implicated in a bribery case related to this year’s National Games. The seven suspects — Syarif Hidayat, M. Rum Zein, Toeruchan Asyari, Adrian Ali, Abubakar Sidiq, Tengku Muhazza and Zulfan Heri — are all members of the Riau Legislative Council. They are being detined by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in three separate detention facilities in Jakarta. “The KPK has detained the seven suspects in the Riau PON [National Games] case to support an investigation.
They will be detained for [at least] the next 20 days,” KPK spokesman Johan Budi said in Jakarta on Tuesday. The council members are among those who allegedly received bribes to revise a Riau bylaw on the 2012 PON in favor of graft-ridden construction projects to prepare for the event. Aside from the seven legislators, four people have been sent to jail, while two others are still standing trial at the Pekanbaru Anti-Corruption Court.
The jailed convicts are council members M. Faisal Aswan of the Golkar Party and Muhammad Dunir of the National Awakening Party (PKB), an employee with state construction firm Pembangunan Perumahan, Rahmat Syahputra, and Riau sports agency official Eka Dharma. Riau Council Deputy Speaker Taufan Andoso Yakin and a former chief of the agency, Lukman Abbas, are standing trial in the case. Additionally, Riau Governor Rusli Zainal has also been implicated in the case.
The KPK issued a travel ban for Rusli but has yet to name him a suspect. He allegedly doled out Rp 1.8 billion ($187,000) worth of bribes to council members so that they would approve the various PON projects. Rusli has also been accused of personally receiving at least Rp 500 million in bribes from a manager of state-owned Adhi Karya, one of several construction companies that were awarded contracts to build the Games’ facilities.
