Jakarta is to soon allow some regular buses to enter TransJakarta busway lanes in a move intended to integrate the two modes of transport, Governor Joko Widodo has announced. The measure will come into effect next Tuesday, Joko said, and in the first phase airconditioned Kopaja buses would be allowed to pass through the lanes normally reserved for TransJakarta buses. The airconditioned Kopaja buses only serve two routes: P-20, which runs from Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta to Senen in Central Jakarta, and S-13, which runs from Ragunan in the south of the city to Grogol in the west.
The P-20 route coincides with much of TransJakarta corridor VI while the S-13 route intersects part of corridor I, VIII and IX. Joko said the move would be temporary, to see how well the two systems of mass transportation would integrate. “Later, we can see the advantages and disadvantages. Unless we try it out, we won’t know if it works or not,” he said. The governor said he would personally examine the plan’s effectiveness. It was not immediately clear whether the plan would mean that the Kopajas would be able to load and unload passengers using TransJakarta bus stops.
TransJakarta buses use a raised platform and passengers enter and disembark mostly using the right side of the bus, while conventional buses, like the Kopajas, only have doors on the left side and passengers disembark at street level. Jakarta is planning to procure a new fleet of vehicles for the city’s Kopaja bus network but it is unclear whether the new buses would be equipped with doors that would allow passengers to get on and off both at TransJakarta bus stops and at street level.
Joko earlier announced the city is trying to replace non-AC Kopaja and Metro Mini buses that are 20 to 30 years old and falling into disrepair. Passengers under the new scheme would only need to buy one ticket at a price of Rp 5,000 (50 cents) for both the airconditioned Kopaja and the TransJakarta busway.
