Law and Human Rights Minister Amir Syamsuddin ruled out the possibility of a conditional release for convicted Australian drug smuggler Schapelle Corby. “It is impossible for Corby to be released on parole without my prior knowledge. Under the new regulation, drug, corruption and terrorism convicts cannot be declared eligible for parole as easily as before,” Amir said on Wednesday.
He was referring to the 2012 Government Regulation on procedures of rights of convicts, which was signed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono two months ago. The minister was responding to a report by an Australian media outlet that said Corby was eligible for a parole as she had applied for it before the regulation was enacted.
