0 Bedcover, warm souvenir from Bali

Bedcovers with Balinese motifs remain popular souvenirs. Local bedcover producers keep creating new designs to meet customers’ tastes. Besides the classic frangipani, batik motifs are also now in high demand. In Guwang village all the way to the Sukawati Art Market in Gianyar, it is easy to find signboards reading “Batik motif, made to order”. Along 1 kilometer of this street, bedcovers are displayed in front of every shop selling bedcovers.

Producers come out with new designs every year, making it improbable that customers will become bored when looking for the best motifs. Most shops display their newest motifs to allow people passing through this area to see the attractive colorful designs. Ni Nyoman Sukri, a bedcover producer at the Taman Sari shop in Guwang village, said she usually takes two days to make one bedcover.

The motifs are painted directly onto fabrics, after which the fabrics are stitched together to form a bedcover. A bedcover with a painted motif sells for Rp 150,000 (US$15.54)per meter, more expensive than ones with printed motifs that sell for Rp 100,000 per meter. With only Rp 300,000, buyers can take home a 2-meter bedcover with a Balinese motif. Batik bedcovers are made from assorted off cuts, which make them more interesting with their mixed motifs. In the hands of Balinese tailors, any motif can be modified into a unique design.
