President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's Democratic Party (PD) must
improve both the way it runs the country and the way it turns itself.
Substantial improvement is needed in networking at the grassroots level
if the party is to maintain its standing come the 2014 general
elections, says a political analyst. Suhardi Suryadi, program
director of LP3S, said in a training program for PD volunteers in
Krawang, West Java, believes the Golkar Party, PDIP, PD still had a
better chance than middle-sized and small-scale parties of success in
legislative elections.
"Based on current surveys, the PD is one of
the three biggest parties with Golkar at the top and PDI-P third. PD
still has two years to make major changes and repair its bad image to
win the hearts of the people," he said. According to him, SBY
should use the 2013 state budget to finance pro-people development
programs and cleanse his government from corrupt officials. "PD
needs to reboot its political engine, support government programs and
come closer to the people in subdistricts, villages and remote areas,"
he said.
According a survey conducted by LP3S in September, most people do not know PD functionaries at the subdistrict level. Due
to the underperforming government and graft cases implicating a number
of PD politicians, SBY's approval has dropped drastically to 37 percent
from 70 percent in 2009 and PD's electability dropped to 11 percent from
21 percent in 2009. Suhardi warned that unlike local elections,
parties and their legislative candidates would have a balanced role at
the polls and both had to make contributions to win votes.(iwa)
